Near dark it was when young Ian the adventurer arrived at the gatehouse. “Let me pass!" he cried. “I have news for my Uncle Goddrick — news from the distant East!” Goddrick listened to his nephew's story, patient as ever. He thought for a hard few moments, and then he ejected young Ian from the castle. “I cannot abide a liar,” he told his aide. “That scoundrel insisted he had crossed the highest mountain in the world, so high that he could draw no breath. And yet he said he had been led there by peasants in robes — pagans who ate no meat. If the story be true, then Ian no Christian is, for he failed his sacred duty of conversion to the one true faith. I prefer that he be a liar; better banishment than execution and damnation...”
